Researchers and doctors today are convinced that moods arise not only in the head, but also in the abdomen. Food can affect feelings. Our mood is influenced by the intestines much more than we previously believed.
Ayurveda is an ancient science of life since time immemorial. Diet is one of the three pillars in Ayurveda along with Yoga and meditation. It is entirely up to us what we eat and drink. We need to make sure whatever we consume is digested easily. Anything that is not digested is retained by the body as excess, ‘Ama’ which is a trigger for illness.
The word ‘Diet’ is not a trendy experiment in eliminating general food groups for a short-term goal like weight loss. According to Ayurveda, ‘Diet’ is not about restrictions, limitations and a one-size-fits-all.
According to Ayurveda, the focus is on being mindful about selecting and preparing foods that will best serve each one of us on our unique journey towards better health and wellness. Ayurveda approaches the concept of dieting in a different way; it has a broader approach that encompasses
# What we eat? Nature and quantity of food
# How we consume food?
# When do we eat food?
Ayurvedic Diet is truly holistic and healthy. It takes eating beyond the count of calories and nutrients, beyond a feeling that eating is mechanical, only to refuel the body. It is based on the principles of Ayurveda and focuses on balancing different types of energy within our body. The Ayurvedic diet is an eating plan with guidelines for when, how, and what you should eat based on your dosha, or body type. Due to a faulty diet and lifestyle, the Tridoshas** are disturbed which aggravate in the body, manifesting as various diseases in the body. Ayurveda guides us through diet and lifestyle emphasizing on maintenance, promotion of health, prevention and cure of diseases.
** According to Ayurveda, Tridosha (Vatta, Pitta and Kapha) is made up of 5 elements (panchabhutas) air, ether, fire, water and earth. Each body is a composition of these five elements. When the imbalance happens, it signifies the dominance of any one of the doshas.
